The National sire recording stats have now been released. These figures are based on over 1.14 million dairy dams in 16,462 herds with over 10 cows per herd.
The most visible pattern that can be seen from these results is that there is 63.4% of the national dairy herd sired by AI. There is 16.8% of the national dairy herd with a missing sire and there is 19.9% of the national dairy herd sired by a Stockbull. If you were to exclude animals with a missing sire the figures would read 76.14% of the national dairy herd sired by AI and 23.86% of the national dairy herd sired by a Stockbull.
Herd-owners can record sires on www.dev-icbf.com by logging into their ICBF accounts. This is something that can be done by any herd-owner (you do not need to be a member of HerdPlus to record events). It cannot be stressed enough about how important sire recording is. Sire Recording helps herd-owners to avoid inbreeding and make genetic gain within their herd which equates to more profit.
